Mic Test
Check that your microphone works, read its level in dBFS and hear a 5 second recording.
Sound is analyzed inside your browser and is never uploaded.
How to use
Press Start microphone and choose Allow when the browser asks. When the microphone picks up sound, the waveform moves and the level meter fills. Speak at your usual distance to see a realistic level.
If you have more than one microphone, pick it from the Input device list. Headsets, webcams and USB microphones each appear as a separate device, and the list updates when you plug one in. Turn on Voice processing to hear the echo cancellation, noise suppression and automatic gain that call apps apply.
Watch the numbers while you talk. A common target for speech is peaks between about -18 and -6 dBFS. If Clipping counts up, the signal is hitting 0 dBFS and will sound distorted, so lower the input volume in your system settings or move back from the microphone.
Press Record 5 seconds, say a few words, then play the clip back to hear how you sound to others. The recording stays in this tab's memory and is gone when you record again or leave the page.
FAQ
Why does the browser ask for permission to use my microphone?
Browsers never let a web page hear your microphone without your consent, so the first visit shows a permission prompt. You can change the decision later from the site settings next to the address bar. This page analyzes the sound inside your browser and does not send it anywhere.
Why is my microphone not detected on macOS or Windows?
Both systems keep their own list of apps allowed to use the microphone. On macOS, open System Settings, then Privacy & Security, then Microphone, turn on your browser and reopen it. On Windows, open Settings, then Privacy & security, then Microphone, and allow microphone access for apps and for desktop apps. Also check that the device is not muted and is selected as the input in your sound settings.
What does dBFS mean?
dBFS means decibels relative to full scale. 0 dBFS is the loudest value a digital signal can hold, so every reading is zero or negative. Peak shows the highest single sample, while Level now and Average use RMS, which follows how loud the sound feels more closely than the peak does.
My microphone works here but not in Zoom, Teams or Discord. What should I check?
Each app chooses its own input device. If the meter moves here, the hardware and the system permission are fine, so open the audio settings of the other app and select the same microphone. Some apps also need their own permission in the system privacy settings.
Is my recording uploaded or saved?
No. The 5 second clip is kept in the browser's memory only so you can play it back. It is never uploaded and is discarded when you record again, stop the test or close the page.
